Agricultural innovation is taking center stage across Africa as companies and advocacy groups push for more sustainable farming systems, with developments ranging from enhanced crop protection formulations to calls for rethinking water-intensive livestock production.

Clariant, a specialty chemical company, is showcasing agricultural solutions at the China International Agrochemical & Crop Protection Exhibition that aim to improve the stability and performance of pesticides, seed coatings, and fertilizers. The company's Dispersogen PSL 100 dispersant addresses stabilization challenges with difficult active ingredients, while its Tonnegel 50 rheology modifier enhances application consistency across multiple agricultural products, according to Farmers Review Africa.

The innovations support a broader shift toward biological crop protection methods, which typically require more sophisticated formulation technologies than conventional synthetic pesticides to maintain effectiveness in field conditions.

Meanwhile, the World Federation for Animals used World Water Day on March 22 to highlight the connection between animal welfare and water security, calling for reforms to intensive livestock systems that place heavy demands on finite water resources. The organization argues that protecting animal welfare and water conservation are interdependent goals requiring integrated policy approaches.

"Animal welfare is intrinsically connected to water security," the federation stated, emphasizing the need for global recognition of how livestock production systems affect water availability. The group advocates for shifting away from intensive animal agriculture while safeguarding ecosystems that support wildlife.

The sustainability focus extends to consumer markets as well. The Organic & Natural Products Expo Africa returns to Cape Town International Convention Centre from April 17-19, entering its third year as the continent's leading platform for organic and natural products. Standard Bank Business & Commercial is headlining the event, which connects organic brands with retail and hospitality buyers and includes a Sustainable Hospitality Expo component launched in 2025.

These developments reflect growing pressure on African agriculture to balance productivity gains with environmental sustainability as climate variability and resource constraints reshape farming practices across the continent.
