Nigeria is rolling out a digital platform to automate school census collection and improve education data transparency, the federal government announced. More than 32 million students are already enrolled in the Digital National Education Management Information System (DNEMIS), according to Adebayo Onigbanjo, National Project Coordinator in the Office of the Minister of Education.
The DNEMIS portal aims to centralize and modernize student data across the country, supporting policy decisions and resource allocation. Onigbanjo made the announcement in a statement cited by Premium Times, noting the system’s growing uptake ahead of its official launch.
Meanwhile, education experts are calling for structural reforms in the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) as outgoing registrar Ishaq Oloyede nears the end of his tenure. According to Business Day, stakeholders demand the unbundling of JAMB to enhance transparency in university admissions processes.
In Sokoto State, students have praised Governor Ahmed Aliyu for settling N3 billion in unpaid scholarship arrears inherited from previous administrations. The payment, reported by Peoples Gazette, has eased financial burdens for many beneficiaries.
Amid domestic reforms, Nigerian students are also achieving global recognition. Akota-Chika Serena and Tolulope Israel Adekimi of Caleb-British International School, Lagos, topped the world in English and Mathematics respectively in the 2025 IGCSE exams, according to Vanguard News. The results were administered by Cambridge International Examination Council.
