Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has ordered an investigation into major technology firms Meta, Google, and X over allegations of exploiting Nigerian news content and engaging in anti-competitive market practices. The directive, confirmed on July 6, 2026, tasks the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) with leading the probe.
The investigation will focus on claims of market dominance and potential anti-competitive conduct by the tech giants, according to Mr Ijagwu, a spokesperson cited by Peoples Gazette. These practices are alleged to include the unauthorized use of local media content for commercial gain without fair compensation to Nigerian publishers.
Meta and X, both social media platforms with significant influence in Nigeria’s digital landscape, are under scrutiny for how they source, distribute, and monetize news content produced by Nigerian outlets. Google is also included in the broader review, reflecting growing regulatory concern over digital market fairness.
The FCCPC emphasized that the investigation does not presume wrongdoing but is a procedural step to establish facts through due process, as reported by Channels Television. The commission reiterated its commitment to transparency and regulatory rigor in assessing the operations of Big Tech companies in Nigeria.
