Ashleigh Plumptre has been left out of Nigeria’s 25-player squad for the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) due to complications from a foot injury, according to multiple sources.

Plumptre, the England-born defender who has represented the Super Falcons since 2022, has been sidelined since March after sustaining a foot injury, Complete Sports reported. She has since undergone surgery and is still in recovery, preventing her inclusion in the final squad.

Head coach Justine Madugu announced the squad on Friday, selecting a mix of experienced internationals and emerging talents as Nigeria prepares to defend its continental title in Morocco. The Whistler noted the squad aims to balance youth and experience ahead of the tournament.

Plumptre confirmed her absence, expressing disappointment over missing the competition. “I’m gutted to miss WAFCON 2026,” she said, as reported by Legit.ng, citing ongoing setbacks in her rehabilitation process.

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has not named a replacement for Plumptre, with focus shifting to the team’s preparations under Madugu’s leadership. Nigeria will aim to retain the WAFCON title it won in the previous edition.
