More than a month after armed assailants abducted scores of pupils and teachers from three schools in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State, a coordinated security operation led to the successful rescue of all 44 victims. The Nigerian Army disclosed that the operation, which spanned several weeks, culminated in the arrest of eight kidnappers.

Lieutenant Colonel Danjuma Jonah Danjuma, Acting Deputy Director of 2 Division Army Public Relations, confirmed the military’s central role in the mission. According to him, the rescue was the result of a sustained intelligence-gathering effort involving multiple security agencies. “The operation was meticulously planned and executed based on actionable intelligence,” he said, highlighting the collaboration between military, police, and other security units.

The abduction, which sent shockwaves across the region, had raised urgent concerns about the safety of students and the growing threat of organized kidnapping in parts of southwestern Nigeria. The successful rescue has been widely reported by Nigerian media outlets, including Pulse Nigeria and Naija News, which detailed the recovery of the victims and the apprehension of the perpetrators.

Despite the official account of arrests and rescue, public skepticism remains. Some Nigerians have demanded verifiable proof of the kidnappers’ apprehension and questioned whether those responsible—and their possible sponsors—will face justice. As reported by Naija News, voices online have called for transparency, asking, 'Where are the kidnappers and their sponsors?'

The rescue operation marks a rare success in Nigeria’s ongoing struggle against school abductions, a tactic increasingly used by criminal networks across the country. While authorities celebrate the safe return of the 44 victims, the incident underscores the persistent vulnerabilities in rural education systems and the urgent need for long-term security solutions.
