Students and teachers kidnapped in Oyo State, Nigeria, have been rescued following military operations that included multiple arrests of suspects, the Nigerian military confirmed.
“Multiple arrests in Oyo State and other parts of the country disrupted the activities of the group that kidnapped pupils and teachers in Oriire Local Government Area,” the military said in a statement on Saturday. “This forced the group to release the captives unconditionally.”
The rescued individuals are currently receiving medical treatment, an army spokesperson said. “The pupils and teachers are currently receiving medical attention in an undisclosed hospital and will be handed over to the Oyo State Government in due course so as to be reunited with their families,” the spokesperson added.
One teacher did not survive the abduction. Family members confirmed the death of a male teacher, stating, “He was taken from us, and his life was brutally cut short. Our joy is incomplete because one chair at our table will remain empty forever.”
The military did not disclose the number of captives rescued, the exact location of the arrests, or the identities of those apprehended. Investigations are ongoing.
