The Niger Delta Power Holding Company (NDPHC) has officially commenced restoration of the 225MW Gbarain National Integrated Power Project (NIPP) in Bayelsa State, marking a critical step toward improving Nigeria’s electricity generation capacity. The plant has been handed over to the Original Equipment Manufacturer, Schneider Electric/TILT Energy, to begin rehabilitation works.
According to the NDPHC, the handover signifies the formal start of engineering and technical interventions required to return the idle plant to operational status. The Gbarain facility, part of the federal government’s NIPP initiative, has remained non-operational for years despite its strategic location and design capacity. Its revival is expected to contribute meaningfully to grid stability and expand power access nationwide.
Daily Trust reported the handover to Schneider Electric/TILT Energy, the OEM responsible for the original construction and now the rehabilitation. The Peoples Gazette noted that the restoration project is intended to enhance electricity supply across the national grid. With generation capacity currently below demand, the reactivation of the 225MW plant could alleviate strain on the power system, particularly in the Niger Delta and southern regions.
No timeline or cost figures for completion were disclosed in available reports. However, the involvement of the OEM suggests a focus on technical accuracy and adherence to original design specifications. The success of the Gbarain restoration will depend on sustained execution and coordination between NDPHC and the contractor.
