The Industrial Training Fund (ITF) has commenced nationwide screening of 225,000 practising artisans under the Skill-Up Artisans (SUPA) programme. The exercise aims to improve skills development, formal certification, and job placement across all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory.
Mrs Nancy-Ndidiamaka Ekong, Director of ITF’s Technical and Vocational Skills Training Department, disclosed the commencement during the launch in Jos. She stated that the screening is part of a broader federal initiative to professionalize artisanal trades and integrate informal sector workers into structured training and certification systems.
The SUPA programme targets artisans in fields such as welding, carpentry, electrical installation, and plumbing. According to ITF, the screening will identify candidates for advanced training, technical certification, and potential linkages with industry employers. The initiative follows the Federal Government’s earlier announcement of expanding vocational opportunities for youth and informal workers.
Ekong emphasized that the programme aligns with national development goals to reduce unemployment and improve workforce competitiveness. The Whistler and Legit.ng both reported on the rollout, citing official statements from the ITF. Screening is ongoing in all states, with regional offices coordinating logistics and participation.
