Former Senate President Bukola Saraki has petitioned the Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Kudirat Kekere-Ekun, and the Legal Practitioners Privileges Committee (LPPC) to halt the elevation of Kwara State Attorney General Ibrahim to the rank of Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN).

Saraki cited alleged abuse of prosecutorial powers as the basis for his petition, according to Business Day. He urged the CJN to intervene in the nomination process, calling for a review of Ibrahim’s suitability for the prestigious legal title.

In a parallel move, Saraki separately petitioned the LPPC, urging the body to investigate what he described as repeated misuse of office by the attorney general, Premium Times reported. He requested that the LPPC withhold final approval of the SAN nomination pending the outcome of an inquiry.

The dual petitions challenge the integrity of the SAN conferment process and highlight concerns over ethical conduct among senior legal officers. The LPPC is responsible for assessing and approving candidates for the SAN rank, a designation awarded based on professional excellence and ethical standards.

The CJN chairs the LPPC, giving her a central role in the decision-making process. As of publication, neither the CJN nor the LPPC had issued a public response to Saraki’s petitions.
